Knowledge of editors

In contrast to printed information material, the internet can be easily changed. With new contents barriers could be introduced. Accessibility of internet sites is an ongoing process that goes alongside the maintenance of content. On a long term basis a web site can only be accessible for users with disabilities, if the editors have the necessary knowledge. Editors not only have to handle control of the content management system but should also be well versed in accessibility.

Hence you should ensure the further training of your editors. Let your agency provide a tutorial that describes the creation and maintenance of accessible content with your content management system.

What editors should know?

Editors should know which barriers can be introduced during content management. They should know how people with disabilities navigate on the internet and which aids they use. A screen reader demonstration shows why headlines and clear labelling of links is important.

Each editor should be able to answer the following questions:

  • What alternative descriptions should be provided for images and other elements?
  • When are contrasts between type and background sufficient?
  • When are images for visually impaired users well recognisable?
  • What should be considered when formatting text?
  • How can a text be well structured?
  • What has to be considered when inserting links?
  • How can a text be written in an understandable manner?
  • How is information prepared in understandable language for users with learning disabilities?
  • How can it be verified that the website pages are accessible?
