Redesign from scratch

Are planning a new internet presence right now? Do you want a new design? Then now is the best time to design the pages as accessible. If accessibility is scheduled in a new project then the additional costs are small. For people with disabilities a site can be converted optimally during a complete revision. The web-designer should not focus only on the needs of individual groups. A text version for blind users is not sufficient. After the obstruction equalization law an extra version does not mean that the website is accessible, one website should be designed for all users. Internet users who are not disabled will benefit from it too.

How you can rework your site

Major barriers

Remove barriers that make operation by disabled users more difficult or even prevent use. Refer to yourself at BITV-Criteria Priority 1.

Major barriers are for example:

• Navigation consists of font images that provide no alternative text. These navigation points are not recognizable for blind users.
• Visually impaired users cannot read texts because of low contrast.
• Content is not visible to visually impaired users if a lower resolution or a larger font size is not used. This can happen if frames forbid scrolling.
• Users that use the keyboard to move around can't navigate. Operation is only possible with the mouse.

Rapid success, little effort

Some barriers can be removed with very little effort and in just a few minutes.

Fast reachable are for example:

• Good contrasts by selection of new font colours.
• Meaningful document titles
• Easily understandable words in navigation
• Clear labelling of frames
• Scrolling of all frames

Important pages

First revise the pages that are most frequently visited. Information and statistics can be obtained from the evaluations of the page views that can be found on the site of your provider.

• Homepage
• Contact page
• News
